Today there are over 300 homes in the Sweetwaters community in South Africa that are child led. In which 2000 children are parentless and live without adult supervision. The youngest child bringing up its siblings is just 8 yrs old.
The Hope Centre has set up 21 mobile mothers to go out into the community and, between them, visit as many of the homes as possible during a day. In total they reach about 75% of the community. Their role is to ensure that the children are surviving their circumstances and help them in any way they can, taking them food, medication, etc. Many children are dying due to poverty and AIDS, these mobile mums give them hope and a chance of survival. The children are vulnerable as many of these homes are deteriorating, leaving them open to the elements as well as easy targets to thieves, rapists and kidnappers. These mobile mothers earn the equivalent of £10 a month and a box of food. Sponsor A Mother is a project committed to providing Sweetwaters with more mobile mothers and eventually raising their wages to the equivalent of £70 a month which is over the minimum wage in South Africa.
With a children’s village being built in the future and with more homes becoming parentless as we speak, it is a project that will provide an effective and powerful interim measure in Sweet Waters community as well as something we would like to see other communities and organizations embracing.
So what can you do to help?
£10 a month will provide 1 mobile mother and feed her for the month
£20 a month will feed her and her husband for the month
£50 a month will keep her in food and feed her family for the month
£70 a month will feed her family and pay the bills that month.
